Currently owned by Allergan Pharmaceuticals Chief Executive Gavin S. Herbert, who bought the property from Nixon in the 1980s, the estate centers on a California Colonial Revival-style home of about 9,000 square feet. The area was a favorite of Nixon’s, and he had proposed to his future wife, Pat, while sitting in his Oldsmobile on a cliff above nearby Dana Point. He had the tennis court scooped out and a swimming pool built in its place, with a barrier to protect against the wind. A group called Orange County Golfing Friends of the President paid for a seven-hole course. The Spanish-influenced house, built in 1926, has 14 bedrooms and 18 full bathrooms, according to a listing on real estate website Trulia, and features a two-story tower. Monterey cypress trees dot the grounds in order to block the Western sunset, according to the listing.

In San Clemente, the oceanfront estate that became known as the Western White House during Richard M. Nixon’s presidency is returning to market at $57.5 million, a roughly 23% discount from its original $75-million asking price. San Clemente was a sleepy beach town of 13,000 people in 1969, when Divel was asked by Nixon aide John Ehrlichman to scout houses in south Orange County for a Western White House. Nixon, a native of southern California, was familiar with this stretch of coastline halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. In March 1940, he had proposed to his future wife, Pat, as they sat in his black Oldsmobile at Dana Point watching the sun set over the San Clemente coastline. Fred Swegles grew up in small-town San Clemente before the freeway. He was in the second graduating class at San Clemente High School, after having spent the first two years of high school in double sessions at historic Capistrano Union High School in San Juan. When the new high school opened, he became first sports editor of the school paper, The Triton. He studied journalism and Spanish at USC on scholarship, graduating with honors.
The home is known as President Richard Nixon's Western White House, used while working away from the official presidential residence, the White House. The large, Spanish-style, California Mission Revival mansion was modeled after a country home in San Sebastian, Spain and was designed by architect Carl Lindbom. Built in the early days of San Clemente by one of founder Ole Hanson's partners, the estate was originally owned by Hamilton H. Cotton, a Democratic Party backer who entertained such party luminaries as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. By the time he took office in 1969, President Nixon asked a young campaign aide to search the coast of Southern California for a presidential hideaway.
The gleaming white structures provide a perfect canvas for the vibrant colors and textures of the gardens, paving and tile work. Although it’s hard to choose, the master suite might be the most impressive part of the 5.45-acre estate. It takes up an entire wing at the seawardmost corner of the main residence and has three rooms, including an entrance gallery and two-story drawing room. There’s also separate reading, writing, and lounging areas, a private garden terrace, and a large bath and dressing areas.

Built in 1926 and full of character details, the restored residence features arched doorways, tile and hardwood flooring and detailed groin-vaulted ceilings. The discussion, titled “When the President Came to Town,” covered 1969 to 1980, the period when Nixon and his wife, Pat, lived in the city at the estate they called La Casa Pacifica.
